The sacred Declaration of Independence is an interesting document. In its original draft, Jefferson charged King George III with waging a “cruel war against human nature” for Great Britain’s participation in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Although Jefferson was casting blame on King George, the southern slave-owning “patriots” would not support anything that cast a harsh light on their hallowed institution, so those words were struck from it.
